Dr Schmaltz is originally from Kazakhstan, which was a part of the former Soviet Union in Asia, and joined Woodhome in 2021 to teach ESOL to grades 4-8. She has worked in the field of higher education for over 20 years, part of which she worked in Kazakhstan and in Central Europe. Her professional experience includes teaching English language to kids and adults, as well as training teachers at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and abroad through professional development courses.

In 1997 Dr Schmaltz earned her Bachelor's degree from Pavlodar State University in Kazakhstan and then in 1999 earned her Master's in Environmental Sciences and Policy from Manchester University in the UK. She also has degrees in education, and policy. "Ms Schmaltz" became "DOCTOR Schmaltz" when she earned her PhD in Education from the Florida Institute of Technology in 2005.

Dr Schmaltz came to Woodhome in the 2021-2022 school year because she loves working with children and making a daily difference in their lives. She also wants to support Baltimore City school children as two of her own sons attend a Baltimore city school. She lived on a sailboat with her family for 5 years, travelled for a year, and then sailed to the Bahamas and back twice. Dr Schmaltz has run 3 marathons and 6 half marathons and loves to paint/watercolor. This Wildcat is looking forward to working with and supporting our city's schools and families.
